47 hate groups thriving in the Palmetto state

(Columbia) July 7, 2005 - South Carolina is once again at the top of the list, and this time, it has to do with the state's race relations. It seems hate groups are still thriving in the Palmetto state.

Last year, South Carolina topped the list with 47 hate groups. The next highest state was California with 42. Georgia, Texas and North Carolina round out the top 3.

The Southern Poverty Law Center says the state's top ranking is in part due to a large number of League of the South chapters. The league advocates another secession, but does not consider itself a hate group. However, the center, which fights discrimination through the courts, does.

The Southern Poverty Law Center emphasizes that groups listed do not necessarily imply that a group advocates or engages in violence or other criminal activity.
